What Is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy is a complementary, hands-on practice that uses gentle touch. Sessions are adapted to the individual, providing a quiet space to focus on comfort, relaxation and wellbeing.
I work with adults, babies and children, taking account of each person’s needs and comfort throughout the session.
What to Expect During Your First Consultation
Your first appointment begins with a conversation about your concerns, relevant health history and what you hope to gain from the session.
I will explain my approach, answer your questions and make sure you feel comfortable before we begin.
For Adults
You will usually remain comfortably clothed while resting on the treatment couch. I use gentle touch and adapt the session to your comfort and preferences.
There will be time to discuss your experience afterwards and consider any questions you may have.
For Babies: A Gentle, Individualised Approach
Working with babies requires particular sensitivity and close attention to their cues. Parents remain involved throughout the session, and your baby’s comfort, feeding needs and willingness to participate guide the approach.
During the initial consultation, I will ask about your baby’s birth, feeding, general wellbeing and any concerns you have noticed.
With your permission, I will observe your baby’s spontaneous movements, posture and comfort, and consider whether there are any apparent differences in movement or tension from one side to the other.
Where appropriate, I may observe how your baby latches and suckles during a feed, with your consent and in a way that respects your baby’s needs. Feeding difficulties can have different causes, so I will recommend appropriate medical or specialist feeding support when indicated.
How Is a Baby Session Carried Out?
Depending on your baby’s age, comfort and preference, the session may take place:
- With your baby resting on the treatment couch.
- While you hold your baby in your arms.
- While your baby rests in your arms or on your lap in a comfortable position.
I use a gentle approach and adapt to your baby’s responses. If your baby becomes unsettled, needs a feed or wants to be held, we can pause and respond to those needs.
The aim is to offer a calm and supportive experience without forcing any movement or position.
What Happens After a Baby Session?
Babies respond differently to new experiences. Some may appear relaxed after a session, while others may show no obvious change.
I encourage parents to observe their baby’s comfort, feeding and usual behaviour over the following days. There is no established evidence that a baby’s body needs a set number of days to adjust to craniosacral therapy, and improvement cannot be guaranteed.
For families who choose to continue, follow-up sessions can provide an opportunity to review their baby’s comfort and discuss any ongoing concerns. The number and timing of sessions should be considered individually rather than assuming that every baby needs a course of treatment.
Craniosacral Therapy for Mothers and Children
Pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood can be physically and emotionally demanding. I also offer sessions for mothers who would like time to rest and focus on their own wellbeing.
For older babies and children, I adapt the session to their age, comfort and willingness to participate, working in partnership with parents.
