Craniosacral Therapy for Pregnancy, Babies and Children
Pregnancy is a beautiful and transformative time, but it can also bring many different emotions. Joy, excitement, worry, sadness, uncertainty and even moments of overwhelm are all part of being human. You do not have to be calm and happy all the time for your baby to be okay. Having difficult emotions does not mean you are harming your baby or doing anything wrong.
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on complementary therapy that works with very light touch, often around the head, spine, sacrum and other areas of the body. The intention is to encourage relaxation and support the body’s natural ability to settle and regulate.
The name craniosacral comes from the relationship between the cranium (the skull) and the sacrum (the lower part of the spine). Cerebrospinal fluid surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord, and the nervous system connects the brain with the rest of the body.
During pregnancy, I particularly like to encourage mothers to take a little time to connect with themselves and their baby. You might gently place your hands on your belly, talk to your baby, sing, read a favourite book, listen to relaxing music, breathe slowly, or simply sit quietly and notice how you feel.
These moments don’t need to be perfect. There is no special way you have to connect with your baby. Sometimes simply resting your hands on your belly and taking a few comfortable breaths is enough.
Mindfulness and relaxation practices can also be wonderful ways of supporting your own wellbeing during pregnancy. When you give yourself permission to pause, breathe and soften, you may feel more grounded and connected to yourself and your baby.
As a craniosacral therapist, I see the therapy as an opportunity to create a quiet, supportive space where the mother, baby or child can rest and relax. With gentle touch and careful listening, the therapist works with the person rather than forcing the body to change.
For babies and children, a session may be particularly gentle. Parents may seek craniosacral therapy as a complementary approach during periods of change, after illness, or when their child seems unsettled. Some people find the experience calming and comforting.
It is important to remember that craniosacral therapy is a complementary therapy, not a replacement for medical care. Babies, children and pregnant women should receive appropriate medical assessment and treatment when there are health concerns.
A message for mothers
Most importantly, please don’t worry that every difficult emotion during pregnancy will affect your baby.
You are allowed to have difficult days.
You are allowed to cry, feel angry, feel tired, feel uncertain and sometimes simply want a break.
What matters is caring for yourself as best you can, seeking support when you need it, and remembering that you don’t have to be a perfect mother.
Sometimes the most healing thing we can offer ourselves and our baby is simply a moment of connection:
Breathe.
Place your hands on your belly.
Notice your baby.
Notice yourself.
And remember—you are already doing your best.
