Lactose intolerance: why some are ok and others no? here some answers

Lactose intolerance:   Genetic predisposition is the key!

  • Lactose intolerance why some people are ok and why others cannot stand even a little bit.

All mammals including humans have a low or no tolerance to lactose as an adult as the lactase enzyme is not made any more.

However why some people are perfectly fine even as an adult and some cannot have a sip of milk without having consequences?

  • A Study has shown and researched the reason why some people can still have lactose as an adult and others cannot even have a small amount. The results was in the genes!
  • There are people who are lactose persistence with the allele gene still switch on ( C/G-13907 and T/G-13915 and C/T 1310) and some that are lactose non persistence. The study showed that the Dutch, Finns and Austrian, have retained still the lactase enzyme gene, while the Italians, French, Jewish, Asia, North Africans, Chinese (95%), Native Americans (100%), have little or no lactase gene switch on anymore.
  • So it is all in the gene! Genetically some population and therefore some people evolved in keeping the gene that makes the enzyme to digest the lactose on even as an adult and other population who did not need to keep that gene on, such as the Chinese, Asia and some population in Africa at a certain age switched it off.

Why some evolved with that gene switch on for longer and others did not?

  • A DNA sample on two Basque Buriels (2) showed that in Neolithic population the lactose persistence gene was only 27%. While from sample of more modern population the percentage is much higher, which shows that the population evolved at the time where cattle became much more present in the food group. That was about 10.000 years ago.
  • As humans we have moved around quite a lot in the past 10 thousands years and therefore genetically the ones that have the persistence lactose gene can still have the milk sugar broken down, while the lactose non persistence hereditary gene from the rest of the non- nomadic population cannot break down that lactose and therefore cannot drink any milk or have cheese with a lot of lactose in there.

Milk allergy and intolerances as well as hidden allergy could lead to the following symptoms:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headache/migraines
  • Asthma
  • IBS
  • Bloating
  • Pain
  • Arthritis
  • Thyroid problems
  • Eczema
  • Dry skin
  • Yeast overgrowth and candida

Lactose intolerance and dairy allergies: what is the difference?

I have heard many times at work and out what is the difference between lactose intolerance and milk allergy.

There is a lot of confusion of the difference between lactose intolerance and dairy allergy in babies and adults. Here I am outlining the difference between the two and the different symptoms with babies and adults.

  • Lactose intolerance is a short supply or lack of an enzyme that break down the sugar in milk lactose, called lactase.
  • Usual symptoms in adults is diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and bloating.
  • In babies the symptoms can be mild colic to extreme and diarrhoea (diarrhoea in babies is a bit difficult to distinguish, I know!).
  • In babies the reason for the lactose intolerance is probably due to the enzyme not yet produces at a full speed or enough of it, or if breastfed a diet high in sugary foods, where the baby is not quite ready for that much sugar. In premature babies the intestinal tract might take longer to form and hence the brushborder of the intestinal tract might not yet produce enough lactase. Giving lactase enzyme to help the baby digest the sugar might help with some babies to reduce colic.
  • Lactase is only made on the brush border of the intestinal tract, and at some point for many adults or even children, depending on their ancestors origin, might have no lactase made from 4 years old or earlier.
  • For adult the reasons are different. The enzyme lactase in most individual will stop being produced after weaning.
  • Some populations such as Chinese, Japanese and Africa have a genetic trait which stop them producing lactase after weaning. Therefore cannot eat any dairy products (cows or goat) that contain high lactose, such as milk and most cheeses.
  • Dairy allergy on the other hand involves the immune system, where one of the anti-bodies (IgE, IgG, IgM, IgA) would over-react to the protein of the milk or any of the food mentioned below. In milk is usually casein and can go from a mild to extreme reaction. Also from immediate reaction to delayed reaction, depending on the anti-body that is over-reacting to the protein once it enters the intestinal tract or the blood stream. The extreme reaction in babies and adults can lead to blood in the stools and/or eczema, dry skin, joint pain etc.

If one or both parents suffer of one or multiple allergies to food such as milk, wheat, gluten, eggs, soy and other foods or and environmental allergens such as hay fever, cats, dogs, horses and dust, there can be a chance that the baby during pregnancy and breastfeeding might develop a sensitivity or full allergy to the above food.  There are many researches on infants prone to allergies in their first few months up to 4 years.

In one research the infants probiotics or friendly bacteria in their intestinal tract was low and therefore giving an infantis probiotics might have resulted in reduction of the bad bacteria and therefore protection and support of the intestinal tract with possible reduction of diarrhoea and or colic and reaction to milk. In another research using complete hydrolysed support milk after a year or if not breastfed gave the infants and children some relief from diarrhoea and or skin conditions such as eczema and other respiratory conditions.

As you can imagine not many research are published about infants allergies to cow’s milk and eggs and other because of the fear of causing panic and not every child is intolerant or allergic to cow’ milk. However as mentioned above in infants with the one or both parents having one or more allergy or a history of childhood Asthma parents needs to think of a possibility that their babies can develop a reaction to the main food groups mentioned before.

In cases where one or both parents have allergies, vary the diet as much as possible during pregnancy and when breastfeeding might be an effective way to reduce the over reaction of the immune system. If strong reactions such as bleeding from the intestinal tract occur with certain known allergy then a complete avoidance of the food is necessary.

As mentioned above probiotics are beneficial in the babies and adult life to protect and heal the intestinal tract. The first probiotics that the baby will get is the one from the mother if herself had plenty during her pregnancy or did not take antibiotics prior to the birth. If however the birth was a C-section for any reason than giving probiotic infantis, to the baby after his/her birth is very beneficial.

Note: The above article it is my own research done on infants and children with allergies and lactose intolerance and my own experience as a Nutritional Therapist.

Grounding and healing workshop for all therapist

Grounding and Healing Tools for Therapists (reflexologist, Reiki, acupuncturists, psychotherapists, drama therapists, massage therapists, body work therapists and any other therapist who works on and off the body)

The workshop aim is to make some of Therapists more grounded, understand why they might be ungrounded and work with that. This in our experience leads to a successful practice as well as safeguarding your own health and well-being.
Just think of why do you think you become a therapist in the first place. Is there something that you need to heal or deal with? Are you getting strong headaches after certain clients which it does not go away with any natural or medication? Are your client constantly get a headache that does not go away apart for when they get to you?  Are you constantly having vivid dreams! Or feel absolutely exhausted after certain clients? Are you constantly late and we cannot manage time well at all if you try. Are you in a stage of surreal motions as soon as you get up, even though you had a good sleep. Is one of your client like that? If you are one that has experienced the above quite often, this workshop is the first step to get some answers. The workshop includes the following:

  • Introduction to different grounding techniques, including how to deepen your own grounding if you have any tools already.
  • Overview of chakras including their relevance in CST; how to use healing techniques to clear, cleanse, protect and balance themselves.
  • Using the chakras to close down, desensitize and protect the human energy field, and their environment, therapy room and couch etc.
  • Group discussion of unusual experiences, such as sensing or picking up information about the client empathically.
  • Clients who are having unusual experiences and how to work with them.

Here some of the comments from the recent workshop:

“Thank you so much for opening up and exploring this discourse. I feel like I have some good tools (more like an arsenal) to protect myself and continue my work as a CST.”

“I had been doing those things but no where near enough times. I learnt that I would quickly become ungrounded where I presumed it would last all day! Thank you, great course, I would recommend it to others.”

“A wide ranging of practical day and I found the whole experience spiritual uplifting. I really enjoyed both of you calling on your experiences. Thank you!

Happy New Year! What now! Could you start the new year with something for yourself?

The New Year 2016 is year, many that I heard here on in Italy wanted the 2015 to be over, others had a great time. Is there going to be ever a year where everybody is happy about? It would be a difficult one, as things happens to someone or another in different way. One might have a great positive year and another need to deal with one thing or another. I have found that sometimes a mixed of the two is often the case. So let’s hope that this year will be a good mix with more on the positive side! Happy New Year everyone and Best Wishes.

Let’s start with something positive this year.

Starting from looking at what you eat and drink. Could you change one thing to make it healthy? Balanced in some way so that your body feels better?

No matter if your choice is having a vegetarian, vegan or non-vegetarian diet. A balanced diet that is suitable for you is the best diet.

Sometimes that is not enough. You might be allergic, hypersensitive or intolerant to some foods or drink, so you need to make adjustments for that. This might start from birth or when you are older. It depends from various factors. Are you parents hypersensitive or one of them is allergic to some foods or the environmental chemical and non-chemical allergens? If so you or your children could be allergic or hypersensitive to something.

We also seem to be more and more hypersensitive to our environment and food. I am curious of why we are like that and what makes us more vulnerable. Some studies show that babies and kids from a more remote living with less pollution and more playing with dirt are less allergic and develop less of breathing problem.

Some Studies have advocated that probiotics and bacteria from the start can help with the reduction of the allergens. High stress level hormones from baby to adult can increase the chance of allergies or hypersensitivities; however some genetic predisposition is also the culprit here and therefore for some babies and kids there is no much that can be done scientifically.

I have been using the method NAET for reducing the hypersensitivities to food and environmental allergen for the past 8 years with great results. The ones that do not work is when there is an intolerance which it means that there is no enzyme to break down the protein no matter what you do for that one you need to avoid the food. For some allergen the liver does not break down the toxin well and therefore again needs to be avoided, such as for some people chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and pork meat.

Yeast sensitivities seem to be also a big issue for many people. People with a family history of diabetes, might have a problem with sugar and being sensitive to sugar which can increase the chance of getting candida.

I have seen people with other hypersensitive which would decrease the immune system and therefore increase the yeast in the gut, leading to the so called leaky gut and an increase in food immune reaction. The leaky gut syndrome let’s food that are not completely broken down into the blood stream. The immune system will not recognise this food complex as the natural nutrients and therefore attacks them, causing the immune system toxins to cause damage to cells, and tissue in the body.

If the immune system is constantly on alert because of the food complex or specific food that is eating all the time, there will be a low grade inflammation, which is constant. This leads to possible arthritis, pain, fatigue and reduce quick immune response to viruses and fungus like yeast. So all starts from the gut, yeast could be one of the problems but any food that is irritating the intestinal gut can be the cause of the leaky gut.

I am running workshop on the 7th of February on explaining the different types of allergy and specific to dairy allergy. With questions and answer regarding dairy and substitute non-dairy milk, home-made and bought. Things to look for in the non dairy milk if you as an adult or your baby and children are very sensitive or allergic to dairy and other food and drink. Craniosacral therapy treatments for your New Year Resolution, dealing with emotional trauma is a great way to start the New Year 2016. Let them all go!

Starting from pregnancy/babies to adulthood. It is quiet hard to explain to people what it actually does, however once they try is difficult not to love it. Even though the body tissues stores many trauma or emotions from the baby (during gestations) and adults, those emotions can stop the person and baby to function in their optimum way. Many adults manage to clear their blockages and go on living their lives the way they want to live it.

It could be the work that they want to do or with a happier vision of the work that they already do.

Quite often there is a painful experience, for babies and adults after the first treatment, as the body throw out the negative emotions and brings them to the surface, so pain, or sadness or any other problem will show up, which makes the baby and the adult deal with it and let it go. It depends on the adult and baby history how much is thrown out and as an adult how ready they are to deal with them.

So if you feel that you want to change your life this year in a more positive and grounded way, try Craniosacral therapy or recommend one to your friends and family! Pass the news on to them and let them decide what they would like to do. It is one of the best gift that you could give to them and yourself!

Stomach flu, what to do and not to do!

Well if you are one of the people who got the #stomach #flu this year, well I understand you. I have not had a stomach problem for years. In fact the only other time that I had it was in Germany when I was eating too much of processed food, that was 15 years ago.

Well for this one I blame it again on the Chinese foods and nothing against it if it is a good Chinese one but at Christmas cannot be that great! Maybe is my stomach that is getting too sensitive and prefers simple foods.

Anyway after feeling like my entire intestine was on fire and having trouble sleeping I think my body decided to get rid of it, and boy that was much better afterwards, till started to feel hungry the next day and wanted to eat normal food.

Well take my advice, leave it for at least few days. Have something light and small. Spend the entire day in bed or resting. Drink water and electrolytes as the most important thing is not to get dehydrated and electrolytes are very important to keep you hydrated and well.

A brief note on the electrolytes is that there two types the positive ones (+)and the negative (-) ones They keep each other balanced in a very control manner, any changed in that and there is trouble

The positive ones are:

Sodium (yes not table salt but sodium is an important mineral in your body),Potassium, Magnesium,

Calcium,

The negative ones are:

Chloride, Bicarbonate, Proteins, Some Organic Acids, Phosphate and sulfate.

The electrolytes balance and maintains of the pH is mostly done by the kidney. So it is important that water with the proper amount of electrolytes is drunk during the day if you vomit or have diarrhoea. If de-hydration occurs than you can incur worse problems that the stomachs ache.

The reasons why babies, children and adults ends up in hospital with the stomach flu is because they have not managed to hydrate enough and therefore there is danger of sleeping into a coma.

So for babies and children keep them well hydrated with the electrolytes that you get from the pharmacy appropriate for them.

As adults the second day my advice is:

  • Eat soup with a yeast free organic stock.
  • Very little at the time if you feel like that.
  • The 3rd day, start eating a banana for breakfast and a bit of honey. This gives you potassium, magnesium and a coating for the stomach. Keep having the soups with adding potatoes or sweet potatoes. In the evening add a bit of chicken (chew it really well), add a bit of olive oil.
  • If vegetarian add just a bit of brown rice and mashed peas and a bit of olive oil.
  • On the 4th day, for breakfast porridge with rice milk or water (no dairy yet, if you are not allergic to it)
  • Have some potatoes and or rice with a bit of olive oil and a bit of chicken or seaweed or the red lentils cooked.

Eat very small amount of meals, for the entire day, a bit more solid foods.

5th day, eat normally but still with smaller meals.

My suggestion is to invest in a very good probiotics such as any from Solgar, Biocare with a multibillion strain so that you avoid having problems with a build up of bad bacteria and start taking them on the second or 3rd day.

The liver also needs extra care to support. I would suggest Terra Nova dandelion, cysteine and artichokes which supports the liver, gall bladder and kidney for the detox.

Yes guys,  you will feel like you have detoxified, however you do need the liver support as the toxins that you might have accumulated and stored over the years could be released from the storage and therefore cause a bit more work for your liver.

And then if you got it before Christmas you now ready to enjoy the Christmas dinner in full and Lighter!

Have a great time and all the Best for the New Year 2016!

Alcohol and hydration after exercise and Christmas parties!

I came across a study where they measured the effect on low intake of beer such as 660ml after exercise, which many amateur people do after a race to celebrate their achievements. And according to this study, the amount mentioned above is ok to drink without delaying the hydration status of the person. In fact the component of electrolytes apart from the sodium is similar to many of the electrolytes drink that you would get. However if you regularly do that when exercise, it can take a toll on the recovery of the body and therefore not recommended.
Now considering that it is near Christmas and many already are going to Christmas parties I would suggest to at least drinking some water between your drinks so that the body does recover better.
If you exercise after drinking or before drinking, make sure that you do drink plenty of water before and after.
The fact with beers and alcohol in general is that they increase the urine elimination which it means you get more dehydrated.
If you are one of the people where the liver does not detoxifying well, you also end up with more toxins in your body than others.
The eggs and toast for the next day actually helps to eliminate the alcohol or break it down more easily. However if you have a big night out, my suggestion is to drink water afterwards and the next day have plenty of vegetables of different colours a good healthy meals and water to hydrate again.
The other reminder for whom have not read my MSG blog before is that if you are hypersensitive to it, remember to either ask the Chinese restaurant to reduce the soya sauce or ask for no sauce at all. If you cannot avoid it, drink water in between. However with that you might drink too much water and cause also a bit of damage to the cell which gets too much potassium in and less sodium in the cell and more outside the cell (too much more, which it means retaining water and cause problems as well. So balance or avoid Chinese Restaurant that uses too much MSG.
So moderation for everything!
If you are also thinking of doing a detox after Christmas, make sure to support your liver or you might end up damping the toxins in your body! If the liver is not supported or you are a slow detoxifier than all the toxins are left around the body which can lead to joints problems or skin rushes.
• Extra B vitamins would support the break down of alcohol and the detox pathway.
• Vitamin C supports the detox and the oxidation from all the extra stress on the liver that is put over Christmas and zinc as well as selenium to support your anti-oxidants enzymes.
• Milk thistle, artichokes and dandelion roots support the liver and the regeneration of the liver cell rest, also the foods such as radicchio, rosemary, rockets and chicory, which are all bitter salads and herbs support your liver detox pathway.
• Good protein is also needed for that detox, so either fish, lean meat and or beans and lentils for vegan and vegetarian.
• Eggs as I mentioned above are full of good nutrients, they just had a bad reputation about cholesterol, however most cholesterol is made by the liver and the excess sugar from other alcohol or foods is converted into fat and is that fat which than become the bad cholesterol.

Constipation in babies and children

Constipation in babies and children. What are the possible causes?

Definition of constipation according to the Roma Criteria

According to Roma II Criteria (Pashankar, 2005)) the following is their definition of functional constipation in babies and

  • Pebble like stools
  • Hard stools or firm stools two times or less per week for 2 weeks in the absence of organic causes in infants and preschool children.
  • Functional fecal retention by Rome II criteria4 is diagnosed by passage of large diameter stools less than two times per week and retentive posturing to avoid defecation for at least 12 weeks in children from infancy to 16 years of age.
  • Lumpy or hard stools.
  • Straining
  • Less than 3 defecations per week
  • Sensation of incomplete defecations

However this criteria is very restrictive and not actual mention other possible type of constipation which can be as distressing as the worse one. Therefore the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) committee came up with a simple definition of constipation as a delay or difficulty in defecation that is present for 2 weeks or more and sufficient to cause significant distress to the patient (Pashankar, 2005).

In my experience, babies and children that are constipated have colicky symptoms and pain as well as fear of going to the toilet because of discomfort. This also leads to bloating and the child not feeling hungry as they think they are full.  Other symptoms that I have encountered are pellet like stools even though passing them every day, which is an indication of some sort of food allergen or lack of fibre in older children.

Also I found that the pain in passing the stools can stay in the memory of the baby and then the child as there could cause problems in wanted to go and pass stools.

With not passing stools well or being constipated for many days there is also the chance of bed wetting or daytime wetting as not able to hold enough to go and or scared to go as well.

Testimonial

Here is a comment on a mum about her baby after she saw me for the baby constipation. Beatrix had a craniosacral treatment for the baby and suggestions on dietary changes for the mother as she is breastfeeding her 5 weeks old baby.

“Thanks for this. Beatrix has pooed this morning so seems a lot

happier. I had to bath her as she pooed so much!” Rosie.

So yes I am happy the Beatrix pooed too as it cannot be comfortable to have the poo in her. Rosie knows pretty much what to do, so it is a blessing for her daughter. However there are still a lot out there that are told that not passing stools for up to 6 days is normal for a baby!

I wonder where all the poo goes!

If I do not go for a day, I feel uncomfortable and I have a backache! What about you?

Mother and baby connections from gestation to birth and beyond

I have become more and more interested between the connection and communication between the mother and baby. I have done few courses towards that and I am now going a bit more deeper to understand the dynamic of the baby and mother connection during gestation and afterwards. Scientifically and treating with craniosacral therapy, I already knew that that connection between the mother and baby starts from the time of conception or even before that!

Now the more I work with babies and mothers, the more I see that the connection is much more important that people or even doctors  think. There was a belief that baby would not feel anything. However in my experience babies do feel the state of the mother or even voices from 26th weeks onwards as their ears are developed. They can feel hands before that, and their mother and father love. I always suggest to fathers also to get involved in reading the same book every night after the 26th weeks and put their hands on the belly, as the baby will recognise not only the father voice but the book that they are reading to them. This is a  great way for father to connect to their partner pregnancy experience.  And after that there are babies and father classes with by Karen which is one of the Born Together therapist group. So as much as possible try to have time together where you are relaxed and focus on the baby and welcome the baby too during pregnancy and when the baby is born.

With craniosacral therapy I usually work on the mother physical and emotional state and whatever fear there is that the mother might not be aware of. Including not being yet ready for the baby to come, while the baby cannot wait to come out and therefore might create a conflict. Remember that the baby is the one that start the contractions and let you know when is ready to meet the world!

Every time I see a baby I just think it is such a miracle, and that is thank to the mother and father of the baby. It is amazing that two group of cells can great a big baby from the connection that they make. As humans we can create this amazing beautiful human being, who has formed a bit of personality already in the womb. And if the mother and the father connect before the birth they almost can sense the baby personality. Do not worry there is nothing wrong if you do not feel it or even have the time to connect because of work, however the experience will be much better if you do manage to connect every now and then and you start knowing your baby even before the birth.

Craniosacral treatments during pregnancy it is not only about the physical aspect of the pregnancy but the whole system which include the connection between the baby inside world and his outside world which you create as parents!

I am always amazed how each baby has a different response to the treatment and a different communication with my touch. For some babies it takes a bit of time and sometimes they just want to feel safe in their mother arms, and they let me work with them then. I always allow them to choose how they want to work with me, so that even at that early age they feel they have a choice!

Throat sensitivities and tickly cough: trapped emotions or physical problem?

I have treated now many people and quite a lot with either thyroid or tickly cough that does not go away with anything. I just remember one of my clients who constantly coughed for more than a 1 year before I saw her. The doctors could not find anything wrong with her. She came to me for possible testing of food or environmental sensitivities. I tested her for the food and environmental allergen but I could not find that many. I had the intuition that the allergies were not her main problem. However we desensitized the allergens that we found one by one. As I by now combined craniosacral therapy with each follow up and NAET treatment, I could feel that her throat was quite stuck, closed down in fact. So I worked on it for a couple of sessions. During the craniosacral sessions, sometimes I say what I feel and we talked a bit of the feeling that I was feeling on her throat. So whatever was stuck emotionally there, came out in the open and she could face it quite well after that. I did not hear from her for about a month. Sometimes happens that client lives become so busy in a positive way. However I was curious to know what happened. Well after a month she emailed me back to book another session, she apologized for not being in touch sooner, but she went out of the Country for a bit as her life just changed all of sudden and her cough was also gone completely. She went back to the doctor and told them that whatever I did managed to stop the cough!

The doctor was curious about it and my client tried to explain but scientifically it is quite hard to explain as sometimes things that work cannot be scientifically proven, such as homeopathy, acupuncture, craniosacral, NAET method, healing, aromatherapy, back remedies and rescue remedies, and all the things that have been used for century but still work. I still see many people with throat or thyroid problems which change all of the sudden for no apparent reasons. Not everything that we feel physically is due to a physical problem and vice versa!

Please note : this is not a cure for thyroid or not a substitute for any thyroid medication.
