Constipation and nutrition help tips with fruits salads

Constipation is a major problem, more than people think it is. This is true from babies, children and adults. Some babies do not go for 1 week and unfortunately medically is considered ok. I do not know about you but if I do not go for a day I feel bloated and unwell. If you are one of these people who repel fruits or vegetables or salads, well if you want to eliminate toxins from your body, you need to drink plenty of water for an adult up to 2 liters and half of mineral water (non fizzy) and eat plenty of mixed vegetables and fruits. Some recommendation is from 5 to 10 pieces of varied fruits and vegetables a day, to get all the mixed nutrients that you need in your diet as well as going to the loo ok. 

If you do not like fruits or vegetables, well that can be a lie for you as there must be some vegetables or fruits that you must like. Maybe you have not tried all the 100 or 1000 varied fruits and vegetables that are out there, apart from bananas which many people do like, there is much more. The fruits salad above, I made it with all the following fruits: cherries, blueberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, bananas, apples, apricots, prunes, and one freshly squeezed lemon, you can add one freshly squeezed orange juices to make it sweeter and to preserve it in the fridge for about 2 days. You can add yogurt of any kind to make it a delicious dessert for you and your children. You blend it with the orange juice and lemon juices and make ice lolly for the children to have as a dessert. That would make them have enough fruits for their day. Just a warning that if you have candida or yeast (fermented poo which smells acidic and diarrhea), then you can have a varied salad with up to 10 varied pieces of vegetables, such as green leafy vegetables (Cos lettuce, rockets, radicchio salad, any other green curly leafy vegetables, spinach, avocadoes, tomatoes, carrots, beetroot, artichokes, olives, and green beans or any other green leafy vegetables. The above will make you go to the loo everyday and give you most of the vitamins and minerals that you need in your daily life. If you have a health issue then this might not work and you need to see a nutritional therapist like me.

NAET for hayfever reduction and more

I have been using NAET for testing and desensitize food and environmental over-reaction for the past 7 years. For the once that do not know, here what it is and how the person who used it first developed it:

The theoretical basis of the method is a combination of knowledge derived from allopathic medicine, oriental medicine and acupuncture or acupressure (as I use) chiropractic, kinesiology and nutrition. Dr Devi Nambudripad’s simple definition of an allergy is as follows: An allergy is an adverse physical, physiological, and/or psychological response of an individual towards one or more substances also known as allergens. My interpretation is more of over-reaction from the Immune System.  These substances are usually harmless, well tolerated or even useful for most people. Dr Nambudripad’s approach is the same for full-blown allergies involving the release of immunoglobulin type E (IgE-mediated reactions) in the body, and for intolerance, sensitivities and hypersensitivities (non-IgE mediated reactions). I work mainly with the other antibodies reaction that causes delayed reaction up to 72 hours after contact with them and or masked reaction. I use her technique for diagnoses and treatments of the over reactions to balance the immune system to its normal self. If we apply the fundamental thoughts of oriental medical theory, which asserts that everything on earth is surrounded by an electromagnetic field, this “adverse response” can be defined as “an energy imbalance (in the body) caused by the clash between two or more incompatible energies”. This conflict creates energy blockages in the meridians (energy pathways), and accumulated blockages can cause various complaints and pathological conditions. These incompatible energies or energy imbalances are considered synonymous with “allergies” in the context of the NAET method. I use the combination of NAET and Cranio-Sacral Therapy now, which it gives the extra balance between the body, the mind and the emotional cells. There are lots of research and studies regarding the connection between the body and mind and specifically the mind and the intestinal tract. The mind can affect the intestinal tract and the intestinal tract can affect the mind. Serotonin receptors, which are the receptors that make us happy or unhappy, are found in the intestinal tract as well. Using the combination of NAET Nutrition and Cranio-sacral therapy, I had a higher success rate from before, for the reduction of Irritable bowel Syndrome and reduction in the severity of the food and environmental reactions. Healing babies birth trauma with craniosacral therapy

Healing babies and children birth trauma and early years trauma (this can be healed in adulthood as well to a certain extend).

Some of the children and babies that I treated with CS had some traumatic birth or even not and what some of the issues that reduced were:

  • Stronger connection with mother and babies (the mother needs to be treated as well as the baby for both reflux and connection with the baby)

If you are an adult and you had a lot of emotional or physical trauma, that can also stem from your birth trauma. It will take few sessions for babies and children depending on the age and much more the older you are but it is worth the changing of life into positive outcome. Why did I become a nutritionist?

I just wanted to tell the story of why I become a nutritionist but in pictures. Since the age of 11 I moved to a countryside in Italy and my parents being very down to Earth bought a land in the countryside where they build their house. The plants that I am showing are only part of the trees and plants that I grew up with. Unconsciously when I moved to London I must have craved for the nourishing food that I grew up with and mostly the simple food that grew from the soil. I loved watering the tomatoes, or the eggplants or the zucchini during the summer. Next to where I lived we had field of watermelons growing and most of the time they would allow us to go and pick up some of them near the end of the season. My friends and I would go and pick them up with a wheelbarrow and eat it there and then. Making a make do picnic and enjoy the juice and watery melon.

I also remember picking up apricots, cherries and other fruits from the tree and eating it there and then. I loved the time there and my son is now having the same experience hopefully that will stay with him, remembering the good food and where they come from, to pass it on to eventually the new generation of children.

Craniosacral therapy for babies

Craniosacral baby treatment

It is called cranio-sacral because the of the spinal fluid going from the
cranium to the sacral is what makes everything function well and properly. All
the nerves and nerve transmission from the brain to the body and from the body
to the brain go through there and it is all connected like a tree with branches
and roots. What the cranio-sacral therapist does is listening to the rhythm of
that fluid and feel if there is any blockage in the body, memory cells of the
tissue and the mind as well as the energetic field around that body to see if
it is breathing well and properly. If there is a blockage just our training and
knowledge as therapists will help the mother, baby and child unblock the
blockage and re-balance the system or body function.

With CST, what we do, is free that blockage and stabilize the rod in the
centre of the body again, so that your life is back to normal, with possible
few changes. Life does throw challenges at us all the time, and it is a normal
way of living, it is the you deal with them and how fast you get back to the
centre, that is important. So, what CST teaches you is to get back to normality quicker and stronger.

For parents it looks like we are not doing anything and sometimes for the
first session nothing changes much, it depends on how deep that trauma or wound is and how the parents as well are dealing with that. It might take two to three sessions to see the difference. I usually suggest at least the mother to have a session so that they can feel how changes occur within their body and around them as well as the baby.

I found that CST has also a strong spiritual healing power as well. It
depends on the therapist and if they have themselves experience their own
spiritual healing (this is nothing to do with religion, it is something to do
with your inner soul and own spirituality however you see it).

Memory cells – my experience with Cranio-sacral
therapy was amazing. My labour and my son birth were very traumatic. My son kept having colds and coughs from the time I stopped breastfeeding at 14 months. As I did not want to give antibiotics all the time, I sought for other ways of dealing with that. Homeopathy vitamin C and nutrition helped to get rid of the colds or reduce them when he had them but he still kept having more colds and coughs that he should have had. So, I took him to cranio-sacral and it took a while (about 1 year to fully be better) as I took him to the Student clinic but they got rid of his traumatic birth and finally his colds and coughs were reduced to once a year and now not even once a year.

He can now fight the colds very easily and usually gets over anything much
easier than any other child that I know.

My own experience with CS was that even after 7 years since the labour my
body memory cells still retained that trauma. I had epidural so I did not feel
mentally any pain, but my body did. And all that pain and trauma was still
pretty stored in my tissues. Finally, I got rid of it with CST and it is
amazing the difference it made even to my personal life physically and

Taste buds – Why does our taste change over time and why do we reject certain foods, even babies?


Sensory taste buds on the tongue

Our sense of taste is a chemical sense. Our few primary taste buds are: sour, sweet, bitter, salty, fat and umami (meat or savoury foods. Umami is believed to arise from the taste receptors of mono-sodium glutamate, which is usually naturally present in many foods, itis higher in fermented foods, and is added to other foods as well as some crisps, and Chinese food). Any other flavours that we taste is from the combination of our primary food taste.

Olfactory sense (from your nose)
is much stronger than the taste buds, so smelling some of the foods can
stimulates more receptors and hunger than the taste itself. Olfactory does have
an impact on your taste buds more than the tasting itself. When you have hay-fever
allergies or a cold, your taste buds are still ok, but the olfactory ones are
not and therefore you cannot taste much because of the that.

On our tongue more than 10.000
taste buds are at a young age. Some taste buds are found also on the back of
the tongue, the throat and epiglottis. The number of our taste buds does go
down with age, that is probably why in elderly age, people can eat bland food
and be ok with it.

Each taste buds contains about 50
gustatory receptor cells. Each gustatory receptor cell changes completely after
10 days. So, if you change your diet and reduce salt or sugar in your diet,
your taste will change completely after about 10 days and if you carry on with the
no sugar, no salt, you might feel that any salty or sugary food that was ok
before, it is no longer tasty or want to eat it. I think that is amazing and
empowering for anyone that wants to change their diet.

It is the same for fat taste and
the umami taste which include eating lots of the food with high natural glutamate
or mono-sodium Glutamate, such as crisps, fermented foods, etc.

Glutamate high food without the sodium is found naturally in seaweed,
shitake mushroom, peas, tomatoes, corn and red grapes. In some people the
mono-sodium glutamate in high consumption can have a negative effect on their
concentration and energy, with other it I am theorizing that if they eat a lot
of the food containing glutamate because they are vegetarian and they add a lot
of salt on them, it could increase their mono-sodium glutamate and still cause
a negative reaction, like they are eating a Chinese meal with high added MSG.
Something to notice if that happens and you know that you cannot eat Chinese
food because of the MSG that is added, it can be in your food as well!

How do the taste buds work?

When food enters our mouth, various
chemical pathway will be activated according to what you are eating. Once
particular receptors and pathway is activated and stimulated, the taste
sensation goes to a part of the brain called Cerebral cortex which is the
primary gustatory area.

All this via certain nerves calledcranial nerve, which include the facial nerve, the glossopharyngeal nerve andthe vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is the nerve also that is essential for yourdigestions, your relaxation and sleeping as well. If you are under stress orthe stress hormones and pathway is stimulated then the vagus nerve for thedigestion and relaxation is not working as the two cannot be on together (readon the fight and flight blog for more explanation about this by clicking here).In a way the brain says if you are fighting or running you cannot stop andtaste food! That for me makes perfect sense!). The cranial nerves take thetaste of the food that you are eating to the part of the brain calledhypothalamus, thalamus and limbic system.

People who have an aversion towards a particular taste or food,
might have a negative conscious connection to that food. For example, sweet
foods can evoke reaction to pleasure or disgust, same as bitter food even in
new born babies.

This mechanism is primitive
mechanism due to the brain learning which food is good for the body and which
one upset the digestive system. This mechanism has been in our human body since
our creation, for survival. This is what kept humans alive for so long, and animal
too, so that they can pass the genetic memory of food that can be eaten and
food that cannot. Usually if you let your child decide what they want to eat
and what they want to avoid, they will choose food that is good for them and
avoid others that they feel upsets their digestive system, since an early age.

So in a nutshell, next time you
taste something and you cannot stand it, start thinking if it is a negative
memory from your childhood that has been created from your memory cell or you it
is good for you to avoid that particular food because your body is telling you
that is not good for your digestive system!

Most of all work with your body
to make sure that you eat what is good for you in particular!

What is good for the flu and throat infection?

Well obviously, if you have a bacteria infection natural
things might be a bit too slow and the infection can get too fast into the
lungs you need to see your doctor. For a prevention of getting too much out of
hand or to heal it without medical intervention or getting to a medical
intervention, then the following advice is worth following:

  • Sprays that I usually use for myself and that worked in many occasions, are:

1) The natural medical herbs that I used as
a spray is echinacea and sage throat spray from Vogel, which soothe the throat
and clears the nose as well.

2) Sometimes I use the saline sprays in the nose and mouth;

3) Colloidal silver spray is another good
antiseptic that works.

Vitamins that I used:

  • The usual vitamin C powder or good quality vitamin
    C up to 3000 mg or more (make sure that you drink plenty of water with this
    during the day)
  • Zinc up to 3o mg a day till I feel better
  • Ginger root, making teas with freshly squeezed
    lemon and honey.
  • Chicken soups if you are not vegetarian or vegetable
    soups with lots of onions, garlic and ginger and a bit of chilly as well to
    warm you up with either a water bottle or cuddle up in bed warm if you do not
    have a fever.

There is a possibility that if you have it big, or a proper
flu, what you need is sleep, drink with the vitamin C and the sprays above or a
combination of them. And plenty of hot teas and water, as the appetite might be
down due to the immune system dealing with what is the priority and the blood
rushing everywhere to get the immune system there and dealing with the

If you have a very high fever, please do deal with it in the
appropriate manner, sometimes cold pure alcohol compresses on the elbow and
behind the neck will bring the fever down, but might go up during the night so
keep something to keep the fever down well. If you start having joint inflammation
at least for the first 24 hours get it down in whatever way you can. Then carry
on with the more natural way possible.

I think energetically the body might be in need of rest from
work, if you have a busy work, or from social events if you are very social.

Sometimes there is an overload of energy that you do not
need and therefore the body needs to get it out of its system in some way or
another. Your mind might be wondering all over with a lot of the things that
you need to do or want to do and never done it and feels clutter with rubbish.

So, a flu might be your body way of communicating with yourself
and letting you know that you need to de-clutter and create space for new
things to come or even new people to come into your life.

Even though it is not spring, think of your flu and cold as
a spring cleaning and for the preparation for new and exciting things to come
about! I know it is hard to think of a cold as a positive thing, and you can
only try it and see what happens if you do!

Detox for the New Year 2019

Now that the holidays are gone and the over drinking and eating is done, you wish you did less drinking and eating by looking at the scale or when the clothes do not fit anymore. So what can you do. 

As everybody else I had the lovely Italian food and cakes over Christmas and New Year and especially the wonderful “tirami su” that my relatives made, and of course the usual “panettone”. How could I have resisted when it was hand made with a lot of dark chocolate covering the outside and the inside with some hazelnuts! Who could resist if they loved chocolate! So yes, haime’ the needle of the scale did go up a bit, and my digestive system and my liver did feel it, even without the drinking as I do not drink. It un-balance me too much to drink, like probably everybody else.

Now, when I was back, the only thing that I had to do to detox and get back to normal is stop eating sugary food, adding any salt to any of my food as usual, eat much, much less, drink about 2 liters of water a day and walk my dog as usual for about 1 hour a day. And the detox is done. I feel much better already! Now being a nutritionist of course I added the friendly bacteria to reset by intestinal tract ecosystem, took some liver detox such as L-glutathione, which is more specific for me, but mostly it is for everybody, you can add some artichoke either in food or capsules to help with the fatty food digestion and breaking down, and reduce the possible higher cholesterol, milk thistles, bitter greens such as chicory, radicchio, rocket salad and eat more fish or vegetarian food such as beans and lentils (of course I reduce completely the pasta and pasta dishes which are everyday dish in Italy). Eat plenty of raw salad, and more vegetables as well and about 2 kilos are already gone in almost a week. Mostly is excess water retention from the salt, but it is ok. I am back to my healthy eating and my healthy self. Of course I also reduce the coffee from 2 to 1 a day as my usual cup and drinking more herbal teas such as ginger and lemon or detox tea then usual. You will lose weight without effort. Of course if you drink you do need to give up alcohol for at least a month to detox completely. No options there. 

Enjoy Life! Remember you are what you eat and drink!

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ileocecal, Houston valve, pyloric valve and more. What craniosacral therapy do to re-balance them

Irritable Bowel Syndrome might be also casued by the pyloric valve, ileocecal valve or Houston valve being over active. What craniosacral Therapy – NAET and Nutrition can do to re-balance your intestinal tract into health. 

Well not many people know that we have valves all over our intestinal tract to keep the food or waste going back into the mouth, and going ahead towards breaking it down, absorbing and let it go of the waste. There are about 3 or 4 main valve that are essential for the work and all of them are supplied and controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system, the system that is usually on when you are relaxed and off when you are stressed out. When you are stressed out or your body is in a stress mode system, then all the valve shuts down as, your body is prepared to run or fight mode, so you cannot digest your food if you are fighting or running. The valves are open when you are in the parasympathetic mode, which is when your food is broken down, absorbed and eliminated.

Now with all the modern work, which most of the time is very stressful and many people either eat at the desk, do not chew enough, or rush eating so that they can go back to work, the digestive system and might include also some of the valve, might be either closed when you eat or open while you are rushing your food as there is a back up of food because you did not give yourself enough time to sit down, chew your food and do your job in a more relaxed and chilled way. Yes I know you are thinking, that is impossible to do, but you can still rush around, do your job and finish it well by telling your body that you are not in danger, that nobody is going to kill you (really) if something is not finished on time or if you do your job with a different attitude and the world really is not going to end!

So, you can still work without the stress and the fears that you are telling yourself, or your boss is telling you. If everyone around you is shouting than imagine an imaginary ball of protection around you, where all the anger, frustration and annoyance from other people bounce out and transmute into love and only love and loving thoughts and words can enter your little ball of protection. Just try it for a while and see what happens.

More of the physical things that you can do before eating your food and after is breathing from your diaphragm by raising your belly when you breathe in and pushing the belly in when you breathe out. Do that about 3 or 4 times before you eat and you put your mind in a completely different mood and system, so that you can digest and absorb your food.

Now going back to what the valves are in your digestive tract:

  • The first one is the pyloric valve. This valve is between the stomach and the small intestine, and what it does is allow the food and a bit of acid from the stomach to enter the first part of the small intestine, which is a more neutral and lower in acid part of the intestine. One a certain amount as entered then the valve usually should shut down, and the food start being digested and being pushed into the further part of the small intestine, where the digestive enzymes are going to meet up with the bile salt and start breaking down the food further and get pushed down and up and down and transverse towards the colon. When this valve does not shut properly, because either the valve is getting a bit less elastic or because you have eaten a lot of food and the stomach is so full that is pushing the valve open, then the acid from the stomach goes into the small intestine and start burning and or goes up where another valve, the oesophageal valve is situated, and starts burning your throat (that is what happens to babies sometimes when their system is on stress and danger mode).
  • The second valve that is essential for the digestion and your entire health is the ileocecal valve which is the valve that is between the small intestine and the large intestine, so that the waste and bacteria from the large intestine does not go into the small intestine. If the valve is shut, then you get problems with constipation, dry poo, or bloating and pain on the right side of your lower abdomen, near where the appendix is. Now if the valve is open because either you have had constipation for a long time and the colon is full of poo, then the valve cannot shut and the waste and bacteria go back to the small intestine causing problems and inflammation.
  • The last valve but not least is the Houston valve. This valve is essential for you to control when you go to the loo or if you are busy or there is no loo around then you can control it, shut it and then when you are ready you can go. Now if you had constipation for a long time, or if there is less elasticity or control then this valve can cause mucus into the stool or worse, leak poo. Also, this is not a proper valve but 3 folds of rectal muscle that is elastic and keeps you as I mentioned to hold your stools or let them go when you are ready.
